  • 1 cup milk (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 6 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Prepare three 6-inch cake tins by buttering and flouring them.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda; set aside.
  3. Combine milk, sour cream, and vanilla in a small bowl; set aside.
  4. In a mixer, beat butter and sugar on medium speed until creamy. Gradually add egg whites while mixing on low speed until fully incorporated.
  5. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk mixture to the butter mixture on low speed until just combined.
  6. Divide batter among prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 15–20 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
